PERSONALITY |
Never love a woman with grand ambitions, for she would sooner kill you than return your love. Pretty, rather popular, friendly enough to attract people but too harsh to be written off as just another "nice girl." Depending on who you ask, she is either a saint or the devil itself; her reputation fluctuates between stellar and dirty, but it is certainly that which precedes the owner. Slavica Petrović is not someone to be taken lightly. She's proud, ambitious, and a take-no-prisoners sort of girl. You either get down on your knees or get out of the way, because her only path is forward and she won't take detours for anyone. That said, Slavica often aggressive, always vain, and fiercely critical of others; however, she is not completely lacking in saving graces. For someone who seems overtly hostile, she is tempered by a certain politesse towards those she is unfamiliar with, and candid friendliness with those she likes. To her friends (of which she has few), she is quite loyal and very supportive. In fact, they might say that she is very fun to be around. When Slavica loosens up, she has a sarcastic sense of humor, and has a tendency to lightly tease those around her. However, she is also a very blunt person, so when it comes down to it she will drop the attitude and frankly tell you that the essay you wrote is a damn piece of shit. She is also bold to the point that, if there is something that attracts people to her, it is not because of charisma but a sheer force of personality. If you plan to align yourself to see Slavica as a generally cool if mouthy girl, you either want to be a friend or a complete stranger. There are no such things as casual acquaintances for her good image. She sounds quite desperate, doesn't she? To some degree, Slavica craves recognition from others, but that is not the central reason for her attitude. No, what she loves—thrives off of—is power over others. She is quite enamored of the idea that she can influence people, to make them do as she likes, to answer to her and her alone. Not even her dearest friends are exempt from this sentiment. This makes her tend towards manipulative behavior, and in fact she is easily displeased when things don't go her way. She holds a grudge at those times—oh, does she hold a grudge. Rather than allowing the violations to scar over, she tattoos them onto her being to know exactly who it is that deserves her resentment. As might be deduced from these characteristics, Slavica has a vicious temper. She is quick to anger, and very unafraid of expressing it. Those who have crossed her have been met with sharp words if they're lucky, or more drastic action if they're not. Nothing violent (not necessarily), but she has a few underhanded methods to make life rather miserable for your typical high-schooler. That said, she isn't a non-violent person. Not by a long shot. Though she isn't a delinquent of any sort, she has no qualms against physical action, and she is perfectly willing to use it in the heat of the moment. As if to compound the effect of her volatile temper, Slavica also tends to be moody. Left to her own devices, she is brooding, often caught on the negative aspects of life. This is something she can be distracted from in the company of others, but she still tends towards cynicism, and is often critical of what happens around her. Many would say that she is incapable of enjoying anything, though that is rather false. It's simply that the moments in which she expresses genuine enjoyment are few and far between around those who don't know her. Other than her love of power, Slavica is also dangerously ambitious. Her family being what it is, she constantly strives to achieve more, to reach higher, and to rise. Her impulsiveness and hair-trigger temper lead to a lack of foresight which sets her back somewhat, but she is unable to be deterred in her goals. She is persistent, and more importantly, she takes the quickest and most efficient path towards her goals, consequences be damned. Consequences—and morals. Oh sure, it's not like she'll betray her dear friends or kill, but there are certain toes that need to be stepped on in an ascent to greatness. It is merely an unfortunate fact of life. Yes, she values herself quite dearly. It's not as though she doesn't care for others, but she has an amazing capacity for placing herself first. She doesn't do it to be heartless; she is perfectly capable of troubling herself for the sake of someone else, but there are limits, yes. Always limits. How easily can they be crossed? |

♣Coffee - By and large she is the black coffee type of person. She enjoys a cup early in the morning, and during any social event that happens to offer coffee. One might find her more sullen than usual if she hasn't had her daily dose of caffeine. ♣Canines - She may not look it, but she has a soft spot for dogs. Her family had owned a husky when she was younger (it sadly died the year she entered high school), but she retains an affinity towards them. Chances are she'll be much more amiable towards someone who approaches her with a dog. Her affection extends towards other canines, however, including wolves and coyotes, though she has only ever seen the former in zoos and only read about the latter. ♣Sports - Slavica is a huge sports fan. She herself is on the school's basketball and tennis teams and is considered one of the best in the department (perhaps one might say the best in regards to tennis). She's a fast runner (thanks to her long legs) and she pays a lot of attention to her exercise regime. She's not very interested in school sports aside from those she participates in, however, she follows international competitions quite closely. She doesn't play, but does watch football (the soccer type) and volleyball. ♣Theater - Again, she doesn't look the type. Nevertheless, she is quite interested in theater and the performing arts. No, she would never perform in them herself, but she likes watching shows that are well-executed. She enjoys being taken out to plays or musicals, though the tickets she requests are usually quite expensive, as she doesn't like to settle for third-rate performances at the school or in local theaters. ♣Science - By and large, this is the subject she excels in most. Her mathematics, physics and chemistry grades are top-notch with little effort put in—it's a mystery how she does so well in those classes and yet only has unexceptional grades on almost every other class. It is likely simply a question of effort, as she doesn't put much of it into subjects she doesn't care for. It's just chance that has made her an adept scientist. ♣Economics - Another subject in which she excels. She's only taken one class in it so far, but she had demonstrated a superb skill for grasping economic concepts. Her math skills, naturally, help her out, though she also has an innate sense for the increase of profit. In fact she is quite interested in pursuing a business major in college. ♣Dark humor - Taking after her countrymen, Slavica is rather fond of dark humor and comedies. Sometimes exercising it herself, a lot of her attention on popular media is dedicated towards books and shows that are inclined towards this sort of humor. She has a very particular idea though, of how it is done right and wrong, and a mistaken execution will earn all of her contempt. ♣Winning - Ah, yes. The only goal in life is victory. Slavica likes to—no loves to—win. Sports competitions? Gold or none at all. Science class? If the teacher doesn't recognize her brilliance by name, it is all fruitless. Rivalries? Everyone else has to go. She resists all opposition and wants things to go her way, and she can't be more confident of herself when they do. She continually strives for success, and even if she doesn't achieve her ultimate goal, all that matters is that she'd come out in better shape than everyone else. Slavica fights a no-holds-barred battle against life itself, regardless of what the cost. | ♣Pretty much everything - She is nothing short of insanely difficult to please. She is usually able to find a flaw in anything and she doesn't hesitate to comment on it. It doesn't help that she tends towards cynicism, and so her criticism comes often and quite bluntly. Chances are if she doesn't like it, she hates it. ♣Romance - Okay, okay, maybe eventually, but not now. Although she is admired by several, she is utterly uninterested in a romantic relationship. She has other, more important, things to pursue, and she hasn't the time to worry about whether or not she's paying her significant other enough attention, or if what she says is hurtful to them. The prospect of having someone later on is a possibility, but she isn't going out of her way to contribute to high school romance dramas. ♣Obstacles - Slavica doesn't like having things—or people—get in her way. Oh no, not at all. In such cases she viciously plows her way through each obstacle, taking the most direct way towards her goal. She is incredibly stubborn and it is almost a given that she will overcome what is obstructing her. Nevertheless, she doesn't enjoy having her pathway blocked, no matter how small the nuisance. ♣Losing - Of course—the very opposite of victory. Slavica has some very defined lines drawn between those two, and anything that isn't a victory may very well be considered a loss. Anything she considers a loss is unacceptable and she will persistently keep attacking the situation in hopes of emerging victorious. Because of this, her grudges don't fade easily, and she won't give up until she feels that she has come out on top. |
Fears |
♣Failure - Fitting for someone who loves to win and hates to lose. Failure comes in several different facets; for example, loss is a failure, and those she hates. But the prospect of failing in the long term, of not achieving what she has worked towards because of her own weakness or someone else's cunning—that scares her. She tries never to let doubts creep into her mind and reassures herself that as long as she perseveres, she will overcome, but she is frightened by the prospect that the road she is going down might not be the one that is meant for her. ♣Loss - No, not as in being defeated. It's not that type of loss this time. As much as Slavica puts up a fierce front, she is, after all, just a high schooler and she fears what most other high schoolers do: she's afraid of losing what she has—friends, family, possessions, opportunities... It's not something she has to think about often, but often enough. It also happens to be the cause of her debilitating moments of insecurity. She recovers from them quickly, but during those moments she can't help but question if she won't end up driving everyone away after all. If God might find it appropriate to take away everything she has, just when she is on her way to success. Is her good life invulnerable enough to last? |
BACKSTORY |
Slavica was born in the outskirts of Belgrade, Serbia, in the poorer area of town. Her father was a laborer who worked in construction, her mother was a teacher. They were both in their late thirties when they finally decided to have a child, so she was raised by two aging, albeit very caring, parents. She was spared from exposure to inexperienced parenthood, and although her family was not wealthy, she was never desperate for anything. There was always food, presents at Christmas, and from time to time there were movie theaters, concerts, and amusement parks. They lead a very mediocre life. At the age of five, just before her birthdate, her parents presented her with a dog. He was a husky, also five years old whom they'd adopted from the shelter. Though he wasn't the puppy children usually dreamt of, Slavica loved him very much and did her best at five years of age to care for him. She was told that the dog's name was Nikola, after the scientist Nikola Tesla, and the girl took to calling him Nicky for short. Slavica's life in school, which began later that year, was rather uneventful. She did well in some classes, poorly in others, and she started to learn to play tennis. She made friends just as well as any other elementary schooler, although she was known for outbursts of temper and had, occasionally, ended up fighting with other children. Even so, she was energetic and earnest, and even as a child, she had a personality that softened teachers towards her. The most tumultuous time in her life as of yet started in fifth grade. That year, her father was a victim of the many lay-offs his company was conducting, and a cut paycheck from her mother's side reduced their family income. Yet their despair did not last very long. As if in a stroke of fate, a job ad reached her father, inviting him to a position on a certain "Alms Island." A company wanted to start construction projects on the island, and was looking for employees who would be willing to move there. All costs, including transportation and housing, would be paid for by the company for up to three years. After a long discussion, the Petrović family finally decided to move. Initially, Slavica was not happy with the change. She loved Serbia and couldn't stand to leave her friends and native country to live in an unfamiliar place. For awhile, she became withdrawn and sullen, traits that haven't yet been completely overcome. It was only a long time after they'd settled down that she began to see the benefits of Alms Island. However grudgingly, she had to admit that the education there provided her with a much better chance at success in the future than her run-down little school back in Serbia. What was more, the island was quite peaceful aside from the stories one would hear about the cursed class, and her father and mother both had better paying jobs and they could finally afford a decent apartment. For once in their lives, it felt like a success. Slavica was lucky that Alms Island seemed to be a place of immigrants. Her faltering English was never made fun of, and the community seemed more than happy to accept the Petrović family. Even when her father's company's project fell through for unexplained reasons, people were quick to hire him for repair jobs or other small construction work. At school, she joined sports teams again and quickly gained popularity as a star athlete. She took up tutoring for subjects like math and science and earned some money for herself. The only further misfortune was in the beginning of ninth grade, when her precious Nicky passed away. She was inconsolable for a month afterwards, but slowly, and some might say reluctantly, regained her footing. It was in high school when the rumors of the cursed class resurfaced with much more force than before. Other kids who, like her, had moved to Alms Island seemed nervous about it, but locals were rarely willing to talk about any incidents that might be related to class 3-3. Yet Slavica has begun to keep track of stories about that class, questioning whether they really might be true. In spite of her desire to investigate, however, her aging parents were of more concern to her, and she has begun to put more effort into her education in order to go to a good college. She is highly concerned about being able to care for them once they have retired, and is looking towards a high-paying career in business management. Everything is going well, she'd like to say. It's like Alms Island has presented her a shining future wrapped in silk, where things are not just decent, but good. Except that she can't help but feel as though there's a reason for her to be there, and that reason is anything but good. As though her good life were merely a farce to lull her into complacency. Everything was too good, everyone was too nice, and she just knows that anything like that is hiding an ugly secret. Class 3-3 is where she will be next year. Whatever happens there will prove if Alms Island is just right or dead wrong. |
